Key takeaways
- FlashProve is a verification tool tied to Anthropic, designed to help check model computation.
- Its benchmark takes roughly 70 to 95 times the GPU work of ordinary inference.
- The cost makes routine, everywhere verification impractical for now.
- The idea matters to crypto projects selling decentralized AI compute.
Anthropic's new verification tool, FlashProve, could help show whether an AI provider actually ran the model you paid for. Big catch, though. According to CryptoSlate, its benchmark takes roughly 70 to 95 times the GPU work of ordinary inference.
What we know
The problem is easy to state. You send a prompt to a hosted model and you can't see what happens on the other end. A provider could, in theory, swap in a cheaper model and bill you for the pricier one. Verification tools exist to prove the computation was done as claimed.
FlashProve is pitched as a way to do exactly that. The reported overhead is the sticking point. Checking a single answer costs dozens of times more GPU time than producing it.
That's as far as the source summary goes. How the tool works, and how it was tested, isn't covered here.
Why it matters
Crypto has chased this problem for years. Decentralized AI networks and compute marketplaces ask you to trust anonymous operators with your workloads. Proof that a job ran on the right model is the missing piece, which is why verifiable inference keeps turning up in AI token pitches.
A 70 to 95x penalty shows why it's so hard. If you hold or trade AI-linked tokens, be suspicious of any claim of cheap, trustless verification until the numbers come down. Who pays for all that extra compute? Watch that question.
