Key takeaways

  • Needle Stealer malware disguises itself as legitimate AI crypto software.
  • The attack uses signed Microsoft software to bypass traditional antivirus checks.
  • Seven browser wallet extensions were targeted in the campaign.
  • Coinbase and MetaMask were not breached during the attack.

Fake AI crypto tools are at it again. A new malware strain called Needle Stealer is quietly swapping out browser wallet extensions right under users' noses. It relies on signed Microsoft software to slip past security checks unnoticed and siphon off crypto assets.

Sneaking Past Antivirus

Needle Stealer hooks victims by masquerading as legitimate AI trading or analysis software. Once downloaded, it homes in on seven specific browser wallet extensions, replacing the real files with compromised versions built to grab sensitive data.

The attackers didn't bother with fancy zero-day exploits. Instead, they relied on validly signed Microsoft software. That legit digital signature let the code slide past basic system defenses without raising a single red flag. Still, despite the wide scope of this campaign, neither Coinbase nor MetaMask suffered breaches.

Why it matters

Browser extensions make daily trading quick. They also create a massive attack surface. When malware abuses trusted software certificates, standard desktop scans won't save you. If you routinely test out new desktop utilities—especially ones making lofty promises about AI—you're taking on serious risk. Verify every software download source, check your extension IDs directly, and keep long-term funds strictly off hot browser setups.
