Hacked wallet, restored access: the thief may still hold a key
Backups in wallets like Keplr can reduce how much you depend on a login, but they can't prove an exposed key is safe.

Key takeaways
- Keplr's documented backups can reduce reliance on a single login.
- A backup doesn't prove a potentially exposed key is safe.
- If a thief ever saw your key, recovering access isn't the same as regaining control.
- Moving funds to a freshly generated wallet is the safer assumption.
Regaining access to a hacked crypto wallet doesn't mean the hacker has lost theirs. That's the warning in a new CryptoSlate piece on Keplr, the wallet popular in the Cosmos ecosystem.
What the report says
Keplr's documented backup options can lessen how much you depend on a login. That's useful. The limit is just as clear, though: those backups cannot establish that a potentially exposed key is safe. The source material is brief, so I can't tell you more than that here.
The catch
Start with what recovery actually does. It gives you your access back. It says nothing about who else holds access. If a thief copied your seed phrase or private key, they can keep using it long after you've logged in again. Your wallet looks normal. The key is still compromised.
Why it matters
If you've been hacked, or even suspect it, treat the old key as burned. The safer assumption is to create a fresh wallet with a new key and move your assets there, rather than trust the original. Backups guard against losing access. They do nothing about someone else having it. Those are two separate problems, and plenty of people only plan for the first.
