Key takeaways

  • Circle has deployed its Arc mainnet to expand utility for the USDC stablecoin.
  • The network lets users pay both transaction fees and transfers directly in USDC.
  • The move is aimed at closing the market gap with rival stablecoin USDT.

Circle just flipped the switch on the mainnet for Arc, a new network designed to give its USDC stablecoin a much-needed competitive edge.

It takes direct aim at one of crypto's most irritating headaches: gas fees. On Arc, you only need a single USDC balance to cover both your transfer and the network fee. You no longer have to hoard a separate native token just to move your own funds.

Closing the Gap

Circle is hunting for higher USDC demand as it tries to catch up to market leader Tether. Gas fee friction has tormented casual users and mainstream payment apps for years. By collapsing transactions down to a single asset, Circle is betting developers will make USDC their default choice for payment rails.

Still, launching the tech is only half the fight. Catching Tether requires actual developers and platforms to switch over and generate real transaction volume.

Why it matters

If you use stablecoins to trade or buy things, Arc wipes out the annoying balance-juggling traditional blockchains force on you. No more buying $5 worth of a native token just to complete a transfer. For the rest of the market, Circle's aggressive move forces competing stablecoin issuers to fix their user experience if they want to stay relevant.
