Super Bowl records and odds to break them: will the Chiefs vs. Eagles break their records?

The idea that “records are meant to be broken” has persisted over the years, and several of the most notable Super Bowl records have been broken over the past decade.

Our Super Bowl records and the odds of breaking them suggest that history will be on the line in the 2025 Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping to become the first team to repeat the record three times, while Philadelphia Eagles runner Saquon Barkley is aiming for the record for most runs in a single season.

We take a look at some of the most iconic Super Bowl records and offer a play on one that has a good chance of being broken in a rematch between the Chiefs and Eagles.

Record for most passing yards at the Super Bowl
The record was set in 2018 by Tom Brady | Odds of breaking it: +5000

Tom Brady's Super Bowl record of 505 passing yards set in 2018 may never be broken. It's crazy to think that Brady gave up 505 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions against the Eagles ... and still lost the game. Brady's 505 yards broke his own record of 466 yards set the year before.

The only other time a quarterback gained more than 377 yards in the Super Bowl was 414 yards in 2000. There have been a total of 27 instances in NFL history when a quarterback has gained 500 or more yards in a game.

Record for most touchdown passes in a Super Bowl
The record was set in 1995 by Steve Young | Odds of breaking it: +3000

Super Bowl 29 was the record for the most points scored in a Super Bowl, such as the most scored Super Bowl. The Chargers and 49ers combined for 75 points in a 49-26 win. It is also the only Super Bowl in which 10 touchdowns were scored, and the first in which both teams scored in all four quarters.

Six of the 10 total touchdowns were passed by Steve Young. Only two quarterbacks - Young and Joe Montana - have scored five touchdowns each in the Super Bowl. Could Jalen Hurts or Patrick Mahomes join that list in the 2025 Super Bowl? Our top sports betting sites give them a 3.23% implied probability.

The record for most missed field goals in a Super Bowl
The record was set in 1988 by Timmy Smith | Odds of breaking it: +1100

Not only did Ricky Sanders set the Super Bowl record for most receiving yards in Super Bowl 22 in 1988, but Washington's Timmy Smith set the Super Bowl record for the most yards gained, gaining 204 yards in the same game. That broke Marcus Allen's 191-yard output in 1984.

Barkley has already gained 2,447 yards this season, which is the second all-time record. It's worth betting that he (or Kareem Hunt) can break the Super Bowl record for points scored, at odds of +1100 on our best sports betting apps. Barkley has already gained 205 yards in the divisional round against the Rams, and also gained 255 yards in the regular season win.

He has run for 60 yards in five games this season, so Barkley doesn't necessarily need a high volume to break the record. It won't be easy, though, as the Chiefs haven't allowed a single 100-yard rusher in the playoffs under Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator.

Record for the most receiving yards in a Super Bowl
The record was set in 1989 by Jerry Rice | Chances of breaking it: +2000

Jerry Rice set the record for most receiving yards in a Super Bowl in 1989, helping the 49ers defeat the Bengals 20-16 in Super Bowl 23.

Rice broke Ricky Sanders' record of 193 yards, which stood for just one short year, and became one of only four players to gain 160-plus yards in the Super Bowl all-time. For his record-setting performance in Super Bowl 23, Rice won the game's MVP award.

Record for the most goals scored by a Super Bowl player
The record was set by James White (2017) and Jalen Hurts (2023)| Odds of breaking it: +1600

It takes at least three touchdowns to score 20 points in a game, as kickers are unlikely to realize the six-plus field goals needed to do so. James White set a Super Bowl record with 14 rebounds in his 20-point performance in 2017.

Harts, meanwhile, scored 20 points in his only Super Bowl appearance, which came two years ago in the Chiefs vs. Eagles game. In that game, Hurts joined Otto Graham in becoming the only quarterback to score three touchdowns in a playoff game in NFL history. He also scored three touchdowns in the NFC Championship.
