New Orleans' Super Bowl history ahead of Chiefs vs. Eagles: Matchup results and scores

NFL fans will gather in New Orleans at the familiar site of the “Big Game” for Super Bowl 2025 featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff for the Chiefs vs. Eagles at Caesars Superdome is set for 6:30 p.m. ET (FOX) on Sunday, Feb. 9.

Our analysis of New Orleans Super Bowl history offers a detailed look at matchup results and scores from the Crescent City. Our top Super Bowl betting sites show the Chiefs are 1.5-point favorites to win Super Bowl 2025 by a total of 49.5. How have previous Super Bowls in New Orleans fared from a betting perspective?

New Orleans Super Bowl History

Super Bowl 59 will be the 11th Super Bowl held in New Orleans. Thus, Louisiana's largest city equaled Miami as the most frequent host of the tournament since the merger of the AFL and NFL. Only Los Angeles (including Inglewood and Pasadena) came close, hosting the tournament eight times.

In 2025, the Super Bowl will return to the Big Easy for the first time in 12 years. There have been many memorable stories over the years, such as two of the coldest Super Bowls in history, as well as electrical problems that led to a 34-minute stoppage during the last visit.

Several venues in the city have also hosted NFL championships. Tulane Stadium, which hosted three of the first nine Super Bowls, is one of eight stadiums that hosted the Super Bowl and no longer exists after it was demolished in 1979-80. Caesars Superdome hosted the next seven games under different names.

The Sugar Bowl Drive venue is also the site of Super Bowl 59.

Super Bowl betting trends in New Orleans
While most cities have yet to host the Super Bowl enough to analyze betting trends, New Orleans is one of the few exceptions. Let's break down those trends ahead of the Chiefs vs. Eagles in Super Bowl 59.

Moneyline
The visitors have won seven times in Super Bowls in New Orleans. AFC and NFC teams have five wins each, with the former having a two-game winning streak.

Since the games were moved to the Superdome, the designated visitors have dominated, winning five of seven. The exceptions have been the Green Bay Packers (Super Bowl 31) and New England Patriots (Super Bowl 36). The NFC holds a 4-3 advantage indoors.

Overall, the Big Easy has unpredictable matchups, with the favorites winning 6-4. However, the team in white uniforms has shown some consistency, as they have a 7-3 record.

All of these trends favor Kansas City. The Chiefs are the official visitors, and they will wear their white threads. They are also slight favorites on our top sports betting sites.

16 of the last 20 Super Bowl winners have worn white jerseys.

The only teams to win a Super Bowl in the last decade wearing jerseys of a color other than white are the Chiefs, who wore red jerseys on SB LIV and LVIII, and the Eagles, who wore green jerseys on SB LII.

Finally, Kansas City and Philadelphia each played in the Super Bowl in New Orleans once. The Chiefs won their only game (Super Bowl 4), while the Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl 15.

Spread
If the Super Bowl odds stay the same or even with minimal changes, it will be the smallest spread in New Orleans' Super Bowl history (-1.5). That record is currently held by the Pittsburgh Steelers (Super Bowl 9) and Eagles (Super Bowl 15), who finished with a one-score advantage.

These matchups had some pretty big lines with an average closing spread of 8.45 points. They only increased as games moved inside, and the average point spread rose to 9.07 in seven games.

Those moves and spreads aren't unreasonable either, as the average margin of victory was 18.2 points. Again, the Superdome has seen a slight uptick, with the winners winning by an average of 19.2 points per game.

Paris South was not favorable to the favorites. Teams that finished the game as expected winners are just 5-4-1 against the spread. The slight advantage for the favorites disappears if you only take data from games inside the Dome, as they are 3-3-1 ATS indoors.

Total
Total is the line of play that has been subject to the most fluctuation throughout the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

The Over/Under has averaged 41.8 points overall. That number drops significantly when you separate the three outdoor games (35.33) from the seven indoor games (44.57). These trends continue when discussing scoring:

  • Overall: 43.2 points per game
  • Indoors: 50.42 points per game
  • Outdoors: 26.33 points per game

It's worth noting that change of scenery is not the only reason for the increase in scoring, although it certainly plays a role. The average number of points in the NFL has risen from 19.3 in 1970 (Super Bowl 4) to 23.5 in 2013 (Super Bowl 47). In the current campaign, that number is 22.9.

Interestingly, the move to the Superdome has resulted in some consistency in scoring.

Three of the seven games have finished with 37 points, while the other four have finished with either 56 or 65 points. Overall, there were only three unique total points scored in the seven games at the Superdome. Keep that in mind when making Super Bowl exact score predictions ahead of Super Bowl 59.

At the Super Bowls in New Orleans, the exact score was lower by 6-4. However, after the Super Bowl change of venue, the “over” odds became more frequent, hitting on four of seven attempts.

Super Bowl Indoor vs. Super Bowl Outdoor betting results
Our analysis of Tulane Stadium vs Caesars Superdome above shows how different stadiums affect betting trends. So we decided to take it a step further and analyze these patterns based on stadium type at all past Super Bowls.

Thirty-six of the 58 Super Bowls were played in outdoor stadiums, while 22 were played in domed or covered stadiums. Before we dive into the numbers, let's make a few caveats: there was no total in Super Bowl 1, and the spread in Super Bowl 49 was a pick'em.

Statistics show that covered stadiums give the underdogs a chance to win. Favorites are 13-8 (.619) to win in domes, while they are 24-12 (.667) to win in open stadiums in Super Bowl history. Favorites are 10-9-2 (.524) against the spread under the roof and even 18-18 (.500) against the spread outdoors.

Weather conditions undoubtedly have an impact on performance as well. Teams have scored 1,084 points in 22 indoor matches (49.27 points per game) and 1,620 points in 36 outdoor matches (45 points per game).

Our top bookmakers have noticed these trends and adjusted totals accordingly. Indoor totals average 47.7 points compared to 42.3 points in outdoor matches. Finally, indoor matches have a higher total of 12-10, while outdoor matches have had a lower total in 18 of 35 matches.
