Key takeaways

  • BlackRock expects autonomous AI agents to buy computing power and data using stablecoins.
  • The asset manager sees machine payments as an immediate near-term opportunity for crypto.
  • Decentralized markets for raw compute capacity remain in an early stage.

Autonomous AI agents will soon hire their own compute capacity and purchase data sets—and they'll pay for those resources directly with stablecoins, according to asset management giant BlackRock.

The firm points to digital payments as the clearest bridge connecting artificial intelligence with crypto networks. Software running on its own needs a friction-free way to settle small, automated transactions. Traditional banks move far too slowly for machine-to-machine settlements, leaving stablecoins to step in.

Trading decentralized compute power is another popular idea, but BlackRock noted those specific markets are still in their infancy. Payments offer a practical use case that actually works right now.

Why it matters

If BlackRock has this right, human traders shuffling cash between exchanges won't be the only ones driving stablecoin volume. Autonomous code could become a major user base, creating constant transaction demand for pegged tokens. That shifts stablecoins out of the speculative trading bucket and into basic infrastructure for the AI economy.
