Key takeaways

  • A Bitcoin developer has proposed 'landmines' to deter quantum-powered theft.
  • Anyone moving vulnerable coins would have to put up matching collateral.
  • Owners who prepared in advance would get a chance to claim both the coins and the collateral.
  • The idea aims to make stealing exposed BTC a losing bet for an attacker.

One Bitcoin developer wants to make quantum computers a money pit for thieves. CoinDesk reported the proposal on November 6. Anyone moving vulnerable bitcoin would have to post matching collateral. If the owner came prepared, they get a shot at taking the coins and the collateral both.

How the 'landmine' idea works

The mechanic is simple. Moving at-risk coins means locking up an equal amount of your own BTC. A legitimate owner who set things up ahead of time could contest the move. A thief who got there first could lose the stake along with the loot.

That flips the incentive. Today, a quantum attacker who cracked a vulnerable key pays nothing for trying. Under this design, a failed or contested theft costs real money. Ouch.

What we don't know

Not much, and that's the problem. The summary we have is thin. It doesn't spell out the technical details. It doesn't say how owners would 'prepare'. It doesn't say whether the community or other developers would back it. Call it a proposal, not a plan.

Why it matters

Quantum risk keeps sliding from theory toward a to-do list. Most defenses discussed so far center on moving coins to new address types. This one goes after the coins that never move, and it tries to make attacking them unprofitable. Hold BTC in old or reused addresses? That's the crowd this idea speaks to. Two questions are still hanging. Would owners need to act before any threat is real? And will Bitcoin's famously cautious developers swallow a mechanism this unusual?
