Key takeaways
- x402 payments grew from about 1,500 in mid-2025 to over 138 million by Q3 2026.
- The data comes from a new Chainalysis report on AI agent payments.
- U.S. wallets dominate spending, much of it on AI models.
- Most of the payments were tiny, per Decrypt's summary of the findings.
138 million. That's how many payments ran through Coinbase's x402 protocol by the third quarter of 2026, according to a new Chainalysis report. In mid-2025, the count was about 1,500. AI agents are paying with crypto now, and at real scale.
What the numbers show
A rounding error became a payment rail in about a year. The report also shows where the money comes from. U.S. wallets dominate spending, and a big share of it goes to AI models. So software is mostly paying other software. Cute.
Most of the payments were small. The facts we have don't break down exact sizes or total value, so the dollar figure behind those 138 million transactions isn't clear. Count isn't volume. Don't mix them up.
Why it matters
Tiny payments are the use case crypto has long promised and rarely delivered. Card networks can't make micropayments work because of fees. If agents are settling fractions of a cent for API calls and model access onchain, that's real demand for stablecoin-style payments, and it doesn't depend on trading.
Now the catch. Automated testing or a handful of busy wallets can inflate transaction counts, and we don't yet know how many distinct users sit behind the surge. For holders and traders, the question is simple: does this turn into meaningful value moving through the network, or stay a high-count, low-dollar curiosity? Nobody can answer that yet.
