Key takeaways
- Fidelity agreed to a $500,000 settlement in California tied to its crypto wallet-transfer feature.
- The deal requires notice if Fidelity ends its retail transfer feature.
- Security restrictions on transfers are preserved.
- IRAs are excluded from the wallet-transfer terms.
Fidelity just settled a California matter over crypto transfers for $500,000. The deal says the firm has to give notice if it ever ends its retail transfer feature. IRAs, though, sit outside the wallet-transfer terms.
What the agreement says
Details are thin so far. Three points stand out:
- Fidelity must give notice if it discontinues the retail transfer feature.
- The company keeps its security restrictions on transfers.
- IRAs are excluded from the transfer terms.
I haven't seen the full text of the settlement. So I can't tell you what the underlying dispute was, or how the notice requirement actually works. For that, go to the original filing and the reporting around it.
Why it matters
If you hold crypto at Fidelity, the notice requirement is a small but real protection. A brokerage can't quietly yank your ability to move coins to your own wallet without telling you first.
The IRA carve-out is the catch. Retirement accounts fall outside the terms, so if your crypto exposure lives there, don't assume the same transfer rights apply. Worth knowing before you plan around self-custody. The security restrictions stay too, which means Fidelity keeps room to limit or block transfers it considers risky.
What I'm watching: whether other brokerages offering crypto get the same scrutiny, and whether retirement accounts ever get the same treatment.
