Key takeaways

  • Hyperliquid users can now pledge HYPE or Bitcoin to borrow USDC or USDT directly on-chain.
  • Traders borrowed $269 million in assets on the feature's Sept. 18 launch day.
  • The rollout coincided with HYPE breaking its previous price record to climb above $90.

Hyperliquid expanded its footprint in decentralized credit on Sept. 18, launching native manual borrowing on HyperCore right as its HYPE token broke above $90 to hit an all-time high.

The mechanism lets traders lock up HYPE or Bitcoin as collateral to directly borrow stablecoins like USDC or USDT. Market appetite was immediate. Users drew $269 million in loans on the feature's first day alone.

Integrating credit into trading

Embedding credit straight into HyperCore eliminates a familiar hassle. Traders don't have to sell their assets or migrate to third-party lending protocols when they need liquidity. They keep their long-term exposure to Bitcoin or HYPE, draw cash in USDC or USDT, and deploy it to take new positions or manage risk.

Why it matters

Native lending shifts the mechanics for HYPE holders. Giving the token explicit utility as collateral locks up circulating supply, which can amplify price spikes during market runs. On-site liquidity gets a boost too—$269 million in fresh credit gives traders far more room to move. The trade-off is leverage. Backing stablecoin debt with volatile assets like HYPE raises the risk profile across the board, setting up much steeper downturns if liquidations start hitting.
