Key takeaways
- Bitcoin is back above $82,000 after a brief drop under $80,000 the day before
- Zcash (ZEC) jumped 11% in the rebound
- Investors kept withdrawing money from ether, SOL and ZEC funds
- The bounce hasn't been matched by fund inflows, so conviction looks thin
Bitcoin is back above $82,000 as of Friday, one day after it briefly sank below $80,000. Zcash (ZEC) did better still, up 11%.
A bounce without the buyers
Price recovered. The money in exchange-traded products didn't. According to CoinDesk's live market coverage, investors kept pulling cash out of funds tied to ether, SOL and ZEC.
I'd pay attention to that gap. Spot prices can leap on short-term trading, on leveraged positions getting closed out, or on plain relief after a sharp dip. Fund flows usually come from slower, more deliberate money. And right now, that slower money is walking out of several altcoin products.
What we don't know
The source gives no figures for how big the outflows are, and it doesn't say what pushed bitcoin under $80,000 in the first place. So the scale of the withdrawals is an open question. Read the direction as the signal, not the amount.
Why it matters
Bitcoin holders: the $80,000 level got tested and held, at least for now. That's a useful marker. But a rally with no fund inflows behind it can fade quickly. Holding ether, SOL or ZEC? The continued fund redemptions are the more cautious data point, ZEC's 11% pop notwithstanding. I'd wait to see whether flows turn before putting much trust in this bounce.
