BIP-110 Bitcoin Fork Stalls With Just Two Blocks Minted

A breakaway Bitcoin chain created over the weekend is struggling to survive as mainnet pulls hundreds of blocks ahead.

Key takeaways

  • The BIP-110 fork split from Bitcoin on Saturday but has produced only two blocks.
  • Bitcoin mainnet mined more than 300 blocks over the same timeframe.
  • Without hash power, the chain could take years to hit its next difficulty adjustment.

A new Bitcoin breakaway chain is dead on arrival. The BIP-110 fork split off from mainnet on Saturday, but miners aren't coming along for the ride. The network has minted just two blocks since the split.

300 blocks behind

While BIP-110 stalled out, original Bitcoin mainnet kept rolling. It pumped out over 300 blocks in the exact same timeframe. That massive gap exposes a brutal truth about hard forks: copying code is easy, but winning hash rate isn't.

Without miners pointing their rigs at the new network, block times stretch from minutes into days. Because Bitcoin-style chains only adjust mining difficulty after set block intervals, a network with almost no computing power gets trapped in slow motion. At this trickle, it'll take six years for BIP-110 to reach its next difficulty reset and fix block times.

Why it matters

Look, anyone can fork open-source software. You can't fork a network effect. For traders and users, a chain without hash power means trapped transactions and non-existent liquidity. Unless miners suddenly step up to rescue BIP-110, the project is a ghost town before it even gets off the ground.
