Key takeaways
- Tether reportedly froze about $1.5 billion in USDT within 30 minutes of the Binance hack.
- Roughly $729 million still escaped, according to CryptoSlate's reporting.
- Tether describes the frozen USDT as immobilized, not returned.
- US precedents treat custody, ownership and return as separate decisions.
Tether says it froze $1.5 billion worth of USDT roughly 30 minutes after the Binance hack. And still, around $729 million got away. That's according to a CryptoSlate report published November 3.
Frozen isn't recovered
Don't mistake a freeze for a rescue. Tether calls the frozen tokens immobilized, which means they can't move. It doesn't mean they're back with the victims. Not yet, anyway.
CryptoSlate points to US precedents that split the process into separate decisions: who holds the assets, who owns them, and whether and how they get returned. Each step can run on its own clock, and each can bring its own legal fight.
The source material we have is thin. How the hack happened, which wallets were hit and where the escaped funds went aren't covered here. We'll update if more gets confirmed.
Why it matters
If you hold USDT, take this as a reminder: Tether can freeze tokens, and it can do it fast. Some people call that a security feature. Others call it a centralization risk. Both are true.
Then there's the $729 million that slipped through, the other half of this story. Thirty minutes is a quick response. It still wasn't quick enough. And for anyone with funds caught in the freeze, the real question is how long the legal steps after it will take.
