Key takeaways

  • Docker users must manually select Tor during their next BTCPay Server update
  • Onion access will not remain enabled by default after upgrading
  • Existing Tor setup data remains intact and will not be lost

BTCPay Server is tweaking how its Docker setups handle Tor routing. If you run BTCPay Server through Docker, you'll need to manually turn Tor on during your next setup or update. Skip that step, and your onion routing turns off.

Manual opt-in required

Docker deployments used to turn Tor routing on by default. That's changing. Under the updated setup flow, existing nodes won't keep Tor running automatically once you update. Admins have to explicitly toggle the Tor setting during maintenance or installation.

Don't panic about your data. Saved configurations stay intact, and your existing Tor data remains on the server. Turning onion access back on won't erase your old keys or settings.

Why it matters

Tor masks server locations and IP addresses—a basic layer for privacy-focused Bitcoin merchants. If you rely on onion endpoints to accept payments or keep your backend quiet, missing that checkbox on your next patch drops your hidden service offline. Review your update scripts before you hit deploy.
