Key takeaways

  • Bitstamp trading volume fell 48% from Q1 to Q2.
  • Robinhood app crypto volume dropped 25% over the same period.
  • Robinhood started adding WonderFi trades to its metrics in June.

Bitstamp got hit hard in the second quarter, watching its crypto trading volume plummet 48% compared to Q1.

That's a steep slump for such a long-running exchange. By comparison, Robinhood's main retail app saw its crypto volume fall 25% over the exact same three-month window. That $20 billion volume drop at Bitstamp highlights just how drastically activity cooled off heading into summer.

Robinhood's numbers did get a small cushion in June when the platform began folding trades from WonderFi into its official app stats. Even so, everyday users on Robinhood showed far more staying power than traders on Bitstamp.

Why it matters

An exchange losing almost half its volume in a single quarter is a massive red flag for market depth. When volume drops that fast, order books thin out instantly—making large trades riskier and far more expensive. Robinhood's milder 25% drop shows retail buyers are holding their ground better than dedicated exchange traders, but overall activity is clearly cooling down across the board.
