Solana published its blueprint for Delivery vs. Payment (DvP) settlement, and it sets a rigid boundary: every trade demands 100% cash upfront.
Under this architecture, tokenized legs swap atomically on-chain. Both sides execute simultaneously, or the transaction doesn't happen at all. If one party shows up short on assets, the trade simply dies. Just like that, counterparty default risk disappears.
Here's the problem for institutional desks. The protocol offers zero leverage, no credit facilities, and no netting mechanisms. Solana leaves balance sheet management and net calculations entirely to traditional institutions operating off-chain.
Why it matters
Atomic settlement cuts out the multi-day clearing lag inherent to legacy markets. But full pre-funding isn't cheap. It traps massive amounts of liquidity for trading desks that rely on leverage and net settlement to operate efficiently. If Wall Street wants to execute trades at network speed, institutions will have to build and run their own credit layers outside the blockchain.
