AI firms want Bitcoin miners' power, not their machines

Miners' grid connections and substations are turning old mining sites into prized real estate for AI, but who profits depends on the contracts.

Key takeaways

  • Bitcoin ASICs are practically useless for training AI models.
  • The real prize is the land, substations and power agreements miners built up over years.
  • AI demand for grid access is making aging mine sites more valuable.
  • CryptoSlate's report says the contract terms show who actually gets paid.

AI companies are chasing Bitcoin miners, and it's not for the mining rigs. They want the power. A CryptoSlate report published Nov. 1, 2026 says the electricity access miners spent years locking in is exactly what makes their sites so attractive to AI firms.

The hardware isn't the draw

Bitcoin ASICs do one job. They're practically useless for training AI models. So the machines sit on the sidelines while everything around them gets the attention.

That surrounding infrastructure took miners years to put together: cheap electricity, substations, negotiated grid connections. New grid capacity is slow and hard to get. Miners already have theirs.

Old mines, new value

So aging mining sites are being treated as prime real estate. A mine that looked past its prime as a Bitcoin operation looks very different to a company desperate for megawatts. Funny how that works.

The CryptoSlate piece argues the contracts tell you who actually gets paid. I've only seen the opening of that report, so I can't walk you through the specific deal terms here. Don't take anyone's word on the economics until you've seen them.

Why it matters

If you hold mining stocks or follow hashrate, look at what a miner's value really rests on. It may be less about Bitcoin production and more about the power contracts it controls. A miner that pivots could earn steadier income, but it could also pull hashrate away from Bitcoin's network. Then there's the fine print. Whether shareholders or the AI tenants capture most of the upside depends on how each deal is written. Follow the contract, not the press release.
