The upgrade rehearsal pushed Sepolia's gas budget to nearly 200 million gas per block. That's a massive jump in total capacity per block. But early data shows the network wasn't anywhere near overflowing. Sampled blocks consumed less than half that newly expanded space during the run.
Why it matters
Gas limits determine how much data and how many transactions fit into a single Ethereum block. Bigger limits mean better scalability and cheaper fees for everyday users. The catch? Set gas limits too high, and weaker validator nodes can't keep up. That threatens decentralization. Testing a 200 million gas ceiling on Sepolia gives core developers a safe sandbox to stress-test node hardware before bringing higher limits to mainnet.
