Key takeaways

  • Delaware Life corrected its 2025 filing, raising related-party holdings from $1.4 billion to $17 billion.
  • Related-party investments now make up roughly 39% of Delaware Life's total invested assets.
  • Clear Spring Life and Annuity Company issued a separate balance sheet correction.

Delaware Life Insurance Company just drastically altered its 2025 financial disclosures, exposing a massive concentration of related-party assets that was previously hidden from view.

A corrected annual filing reveals the insurer shifted roughly $17 billion of investments into related-party holdings. That accounts for about 39% of Delaware Life's total invested assets. In its earlier filing, the company reported just $1.4 billion in related-party holdings, representing roughly 3% of its balance sheet.

Corrections Hit Annuity Sector

Delaware Life isn't the only firm making sudden adjustments. Clear Spring Life and Annuity Company also filed a separate correction to its financial statements.

The restatements bring light to shadow-banking risks building inside life insurance companies, where capital can become tied up in interconnected corporate entities.

Why it matters

Insurers aren't usually watched for bank runs, but heavy related-party exposure creates serious liquidity risks. When balance sheets get tied up in internal deals, any broader credit shock can trigger forced asset sales, draining liquidity across traditional financial markets and crypto alike.
