The Netherlands runs a licensed online gambling market. Under the Remote Gambling Act (Wet Kansspelen op afstand), which amended the Betting and Gaming Act (Wet op de kansspelen), online sports betting is legal only with a licence from the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). Most crypto sportsbooks are offshore and hold no Dutch licence. A site accepting your bitcoin doesn't make it legal to operate in the Netherlands.

That changes what you can count on. KSA-licensed sites have to check your identity, connect to the national self-exclusion register CRUKS and meet duty-of-care rules. Offshore crypto books don't answer to the KSA, so if a withdrawal stalls or an account gets closed, no Dutch body will step in. You must be 18 or older to bet legally. Before you sign up anywhere, check whether the site appears in the KSA's public register of licence holders.

Paying from Netherlands

Most Dutch players don't send crypto straight from a bank to a sportsbook. They buy it first on an exchange, usually paying with iDEAL, the country's standard online bank payment method, or a SEPA transfer. Then they withdraw it to their own wallet and deposit from there. Stablecoins such as USDT or USDC are a common choice because they avoid price swings between deposit and withdrawal. Keep in mind that Dutch banks and exchanges may flag or question transfers linked to unlicensed gambling sites. Exchanges are also required to collect information about where your crypto is going. Keep records of every transaction.

Is it legal in Netherlands?

The regulator is the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). Under the Wet op de kansspelen, as amended by the Wet Kansspelen op afstand, offering online betting to Dutch residents without a KSA licence is not allowed. The KSA has fined unlicensed operators for targeting the Dutch market. Enforcement aims mainly at operators, but betting on an unlicensed site means you give up Dutch consumer protections such as CRUKS and KSA oversight. On tax, winnings from KSA-licensed operators are handled through gambling tax (kansspelbelasting) paid by the operator. Winnings from operators based outside the EU may have to be declared by you. Crypto you hold can also count toward your Box 3 assets. Thresholds, rates and the Box 3 system have been changing, so check with the Belastingdienst. Laws and enforcement change, and this is not legal or tax advice.

Netherlands — frequently asked

Is it legal to use a crypto sportsbook in the Netherlands?

Online betting is legal only on sites licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit under the Wet Kansspelen op afstand. Crypto sportsbooks without a KSA licence aren't permitted to serve Dutch players, so you lose the protections that come with a licensed site.

How can I tell if a sportsbook is licensed in the Netherlands?

Look the operator up in the KSA's public register of licence holders on kansspelautoriteit.nl. A licence from another country, such as Curaçao, is not a Dutch licence.

Do I pay tax on crypto betting winnings in the Netherlands?

It depends on where the operator is based. Winnings from operators outside the EU may need to be declared and taxed as kansspelbelasting by you, and crypto you hold can fall under Box 3. Check current rules with the Belastingdienst or a tax adviser.

Can I self-exclude if I'm betting with crypto?

CRUKS, the Dutch self-exclusion register, only applies to KSA-licensed operators. Offshore crypto books aren't connected to it. If gambling is becoming a problem, Loket Kansspel (loketkansspel.nl) offers free, anonymous help.

What's the minimum age to bet in the Netherlands?

You must be 18 or older to gamble legally in the Netherlands. Licensed operators are required to verify your age and identity.
